Alms Giving
Being a Buddhist School, we start our year with giving alms at the 2 Toronto Toronto area temples. Each year we rotate between the Toronto Maha Vihara and the West End Buddhist Vihara in the month of March.
This is done to give blessings to the members, their families as well as all past and present students who have passed away, that includes Nalanda War Heros who sacrificed their lives. We also remember the founders of our school, as well as principals and teachers who have passed away. It’s our way of paying tribute to those who molded us to be the good citizens of the world today.
Cricket Lovely Cricket
No matter which part of the world we live in, cricket is one sport that Sri Lankans cannot so without. Nalandians too have number of members playing Cricket in Canada. Many play for different leagues in the city and they all come together once a year to play a friendly match, against our rivals Ananadians.
The interest has grown so much for this Cricket match, that the team is now selected after a hotly contested series of practices. The Captain who is appointed by the Committee every year, conducts practices and selects the best possible team
Family comes first!
A chance for all the members and their families to enjoy the brief but hot summer in a park setting, with music, food and games organized for everyone. Kids get the main attention here with many different games, prizes and gifts presented. However the highlight of the day goes to the softball cricket match between the ladies, which comprises of wives, girlfriends and children. Other games throwing water balloons, tug of war, carrying a lime on a spoon etc. We have joined with few schools organizing this event in the past, such as the OGA’s of Vishaka and Devi Balika.
Members Night
It’s a night where we enjoy the company of our members indoors, with a dinner, raffles and prizes auctioned off while enjoying music. Karoake is a hit during this event as all members and wives get a chance to show their musical talents.
From dusk till dawn….
We have also organized some of the best Dinner-Dances in Toronto, that people have come to rave about and look forward to. Good food, Great Music and Excellent locations were key ingredients to the success of SILVER BREEZE, as they were called. We organized these Dances to raise funds for the school and support some of projects, such as sponsoring under privilege, worthy students in College. Although the Dinner-Dance has not been organized for the past few years, steps are on the way to revive this much talked about social event, as early as next year!
Nalandians on Par!
In last past Nalanda has been a force in winning the team trophy as well as the indivdual trophy at the Annual Schools Golf invitational Golf tournament. This event which had been annually organized for about 10 years with major schools participating, has not been held for the past few years. However Nalandians are always in the forefront of playing the game in a very high level, with many members taking up this game.
