Helping our alma mater whenever it’s possible is one of our key objectives. Your membership and contributions goes a long way in achieving areas we see as a priority, students and past teachers:
- Education Fund for students at Nalanda who needs financial assistance.
- Financial Support towards the Nalanda Past Teachers Association Fund in Sri Lanka. (web site)
If you want to participate and make a donation to either one of these two worthy causes or any other ongoing collections such as funds for “pirikara” during the annual alms giving you can donate e-transfer to the e-mail:firstname.lastname@example.org
NOTE: Please make sure you mention “Donation to (your choice of cause)” on the comments area of your e-transfer.
Our Association first sponsored students from our school Nalanda Vidyalaya in the year 2000. Our goal was to help well to do bright students, who needed financial assistance. This was spearheaded by Jagath Perera, as he coordinated the selection of the students through Mrs. Mallika Jayakody, a well known teacher in our school. A bank account was set up for this in Sri Lanka and funds collected from the membership and activities were transferred and sent to the students. We first sponsored 2 Students from the school for one year and increased it to 3 students the following year. We continued this again in 2016 with Professor Janaka Ruwanpura floating an idea of creating a bigger fund, that would generate access for more students. Currently we are planning to expand it further as a permanent fund that would generate a revenue that can assist students in an ongoing basis. More details on this to follow.

Lamindu Niroshana probably looks very familiar to some of you. Well, that’s because he is the son of G. A. Laxman, the office assistant to the Principals Mr. Sugunadasa Athukorale and Mr. Dharma Gunasinghe. Lamindu was selected by Mrs. Mallika Jayakody for his academic excellence in passing the G.C.E. ordinary level examination with 6 Distinction Passes and 2 Credit Passes. At present Lamindu is studying in grade 12 science section and has stated that this assistance is much appreciated by his family who has found it difficult to support him on his father’s salary. I am sure most of us are aware of the income levels of such assistants in our schools and should be happy to be a small part of this students success story.
Meet Milinda Prashantha, a grade 12 student in the Commerce section. He hails from D.S Senanayake Vidyalaya in Ampara District. He had joined Nalanda after successfully passing the G.C.E. ordinary level examination with 5 Distinction passes, 2 Credit Passes and 1 Ordinary pass. Milinda who now lives in Kolonnawa area has also found the impacts of financial strains of continuing his education. He has lost his father in his early childhood and his mother who is unemployed has been very grateful for the assistance provided to her son. We should all be happy and proud of Milinda’s continuing success in his studies in spite of all the difficulties he has faced in life.
